Norweigian Weddings

Can we say long overdue update from the summer...So we went to our first wedding abroad. We had to write about it. As a word of knowledge if any of you get to go to a Norwegian wedding you should take the whole day and next day off. Two close friends of ours that we met here in Norway got married right outside of Oslow, Norway this past month. It was great fun. Luckily we had a translator! Which was good because the whole wedding was in Norwegian. Weddings are not just an event in Norway they are a lifestyle. On second thought why do we spend so much money on weddings in the US but once the cake is cut everyone splits? We digress.
So back to the scoop on the wedding...
The wedding in Norway was from...2pm to 2am! Here's why...
-15 cakes in addition to the big wedding cake (relatives bring various traditional Norwegian cakes)-one cake even determines the amount of children the bride and the groom are going to have!!! Yikes! Our friends are going to have six according to the cake tradition;
- promenades and dances
-30 minute speech on history of region in Norway where the wedding was taking place
-20 minute minimum speeches in between each course-which started from birth to present day on the bride and groom
-main course served twice
-unique entertainment throughout the night
-pictures and video shows
-lots of dessert and coffee
-gifts unwrapped and displayed for guest to see (bride and groom actually never unwrap their wedding guest in Norway-their guest do!)
